Hand-dip and mould pure beeswax candles for ritual use and home, learning the ancient craft of chandlery.
~120 minutes · Season: yule

## Beeswax Candle Making
Beeswax is the oldest and most sacred candle material — a substance literally made from sunlight, transformed by bees through nectar and pollen into the golden wax of the comb. Burning beeswax releases a warm, honey-scented light with a naturally golden hue, and it has been the candle of choice for ritual and ceremony since antiquity. Medieval churches insisted on beeswax for altar candles, and the beekeeper's craft was intimately bound to the sacred calendar.
In this workshop, you will learn two fundamental techniques of beeswax candle making: hand-dipping and mould-casting. Hand-dipping is the older method — repeatedly dipping a wick into molten wax, building up thin layers with each pass, until a taper of the desired thickness is formed. It is a rhythmic, contemplative process ideally suited to meditative practice. The gentle swing of the wick, the slow accretion of golden layers — this is a craft that teaches patience.
Mould-casting produces pillar candles, votives, and decorative forms. We will work with simple silicone moulds, learning to prepare the mould, pour at the correct temperature, and manage the cooling process to avoid cracking and air pockets.
We cover the properties of beeswax — its high melting point (around 63 degrees Celsius), its natural golden colour, and its slight shrinkage on cooling. You will learn to choose the correct wick size for your candle diameter, how to add dried herbs or essential oils (sparingly and safely), and how to pour candles suitable for each of the eight seasonal festivals.
All materials are natural and non-toxic. Each participant will take home several hand-dipped tapers and at least one moulded pillar candle, ready for lighting at the next turning of the wheel.
